Of all places

I think the one thing I have been lucky with is the fact that I have travelled a lot as a natural consequence of my Dad’s job nature… At this point in my life, I think it has been a big advantage for me… To see so many places… meet so many kinds of people.. different cultures… infact different perspectives all together… So here is how the places have been…

PLACE : Jamshedpur, JHARKHAND

The place of Birth is always special… Havent really spent much      time here.. but used to be the destination for vacations every summer…  Renowned for Tata Steel and other metallurgical Industries, the city has nice roads and public transport systems.. Pretty peaceful some years back… though has started to get bristlin with proximity to Ranchi…

Prominent lack of infra in terms of electricity and water supply… Above normal crime rate, but a decent record compared to the surrounding infamous places of Jharkhand and Bihar…

Poor administration… have miserably failed to tap available resources in the state.. Plenty of potential to develop though…

RATING : 6.5/10

PLACE : Chennai, TAMIL NADU

Dont have much memories of this place.. was too small a kid durin our stay in here… However, a visit to this place in 2006 for 4 days created an impression of a silently dumb but politically active city.. Moderate Infrastructure, Poor Public Transport, Above-par roads,  Major Language issue… I think Chennai has an over exaggerated claim as a metroplitan and there is a long way to go… The culture and lifestyles are peculiar enough.. Weather is ruthless througout the year…

The city looks clean though…Not much crime as well…Can’t really feel at home with posters and banners of political netas in their shinin white kurtas with pen/paper/file/switchboard/table drawer/door handles/wash basin in hand…and a strangulatin smile on their faces… I think one of the reasons to this is the closeness to Ravana of ancient Sri Lanka…

RATING : 6/10

PLACE : Jorhat, ASSAM

Alrite.. Poor place.. Hardly any people.. No Infrastructure.. Constant ULFA threat…

I think except the greenery all around, there is nothin to talk of… and I have no reasone to believe that the rest of the state is any better…

Regional food is quite good though.. and Brahmaputra impresses and intimidates in Guwahati…

Infinite potential, but I dont think anybody is interested in tappin the same…

RATING : 3/10

PLACE : Jammu, JAMMU AND KASHMIR

Minus the terror, this is one of the best places around.. Calm, peaceful, serene.. Even being the capital doesnt make it so much politically active… Amassin in natural beauty… small in size… Moderate Infra, Moderate Public Transport systems, A little above average Crime records… Nice people…warm and affable… oldest of my school friends..One particular thing : I never felt people in Jammu hated India.. or really wanted to pull out of New Delhi… They were as patriotic as anyone in the country…Exceptions of course exist everywhere…

it loses 2.5 just because it is situated in the most senstive state of the country… and its implications… I remember the famous Apsara Theatre Blasts on some day of National Importance…

RATING : 7.5/10

PLACE :Deharadun, UTTARANCHAL

One of the places where you can feel there are a good number of people livin.. esp after it has become the capital… Flanked on three sides by the Himalayas, and on the fourth by the Shivaliks (atop which is the famous Mussoorie), all you needed to do was to drive a little outside the largest valley of the country.. and nature is beckonin… Plenty of hill stations all around.. Mussoorie being the dumbest of all..yupp.. there are atleast a dozen around much better…

Perfect place for schoolin.. there is no other place in India whose schoolin culture can match Dehradun… not even Mumbai.. a series of ICSE schools.. mostly run by Christian Societies.. the best part about these schools is the common platform they create for their students’ personality development and healthy interaction… No wonder most students of the valley are proficient English Speakers… I think my schoolin here has a vital role in placin me where I am now…

Moderate Infra.. though I hear it has worsened over the years… Below average roads.. Moderate Public Transport systems…Politically stable.. Still the old fashioned culture and lifestyle… I think there is still some innocence in people there…

RATING : 8/10

PLACE : Ahmedabad, GUJARAT

I think Gujarat is the most under-rated state in the country.. I also very strongly believe that Ahmedabad is the most unknown city in the country… okay…  It figures out as the 5th most populous city in the country after the 4 big metros… and 7th and risin in terms of geographical area… The city has been designed to perfection… and it shows no sign of crumblin despite the absence of a proper public transport system… There is a string of malls all around.. so many that you can walk from one to the other as if its the next Bus-stop… Road traffic is poor.. and there is a clear absence of drivin sense among people.. Not that havin the highest no. of 2 wheelers in Asia helps in traffic management… Also among the negatives is the absence of a drainage system, and the city doesnt fare any better than Mumbai if the rain gods decide to go for a trial run…

There are plenty of amazin things about this city and you cant help lovin it if you live here for sometime… You got the best junk food outlets in the country.. you cant dine in a restaurant on weekends unless you plan it out properly.. not that they are less in number… its difficult to find an empty mall… the city is the largest consumer of ice-creams in Asia… and I think this kind of a habit has ensured that almost no pressure on the State Government to reconsider Gujarat’s Dry State status…And safety has been ensured at a very comfortin level.. Girls roam about freely even post midnight and their parents can afford to sleep peacefully… Minor cases of Crime… mostly confined to the Old City… There is a strong sense of honesty among the people and cases of thefts and robberies are rare and mostly due to personal rivalries…the city has survived floods in 2000, a major quake in 2001, riots in 2002, drought in surroundin places in 2003… and the spirit of the people hasnt really bogged down…

With business on everyone’s mind… its not tough to understand why the majority students are not really interested in education… It doesnt have much respect in Gujarat… The overall infra is amazin.. just for some nos :We havent had electricity supply in our house for a total of 3 hrs in the last 8 years.. 2 hrs of which were just after the bigtime earthquake…It impresses…I dont think there is any other place in the country which can claim this… Simply put, Ahmedabad is Mumbai minus the rush, the locals, the madness, the liqour, the migrant population, the commotion and the nuisance… With Narmada waters already flowin through the city.. and the development of a port, there is a lot of money waitin to enter this place… Prosperity is clearly visible…Money flows…

RATING : 9/10

PLACE : Kota, RAJASTHAN

Minus Bansal Classes, and JEE coachin, I think this is worst place to live in…  Hostility at its best… An excessive feelin of outsiders and unfair discrimination… I had heard Rajasthan was a poor, undeveloped state… I think after my stint in Kota, I realised the reasons… Too much pride esp based on history which may have been glorious… too much of nonsense talk… and rejection of ground realities… Anyway… No infrastructure.. a big time issue of Electricity and water.. even with 3-4 power plants in the vicinity.. poor roads.. even poorer traffic.. Humongous crime rate.. esp cheap eve-teasin types…Havin a majority uneducated Muslim population doesnt help the cause… No stable source of economy.. Even the sales of Dairy Milk depends upon the coachin industry there…Its just the excellent coachin and the culture among the coached that brings some relief… But that would have been there in any other place as well.. To be outspoken, I dont think a place like Kota deserves this industry…

RATING : 5.5/10

PLACE : Mumbai, MAHARASHTRA

The city of Dreams is truly  the city of Dreams… Too many people… Too cramped… Too crowded… A superb but overloaded Public Transport system…although there is no way they can expand it.. Mumbai is a case of unplanned unforeseen events.. and a over exaggerated city on the verge of disaster… If traffic will come to a standstill in Delhi by 2015, I think it will be sooner in Mumbai… The spirit though is amazin.. So much pressure, such a rush.. yet everythin is still very sedate… Infra used to be strong.. but is dismantlin with big projects like Navi Mumbai movin towards catastrophic..failures.. One of the best places for a nightout…

Overall.. a charmin city.. though losin its charm… no doubt it teaches you a lot about life.. and the struggle it takes.. not to mention.. the feel of India’s population…

Of course.. being in the city of Bollywood and other bigwigs helps…

RATING : 8/10
